Our Mission
District Kava is a Washington, DC based pop-up experience committed to bringing people together to enjoy kava, a non-alcoholic, social drink & centuries-old Tradition from the Pacific Islands.
What is Kava?
Kava is a social drink, native to the Pacific Islands. It is a natural, cold-pressed beverage made from the root of a plant that shares it’s name. The kava plant (scientifically known as piper methysticum) is a close relative of black pepper (piper nigrum).
For centuries, it has been cultivated and consumed across Polynesia as part of a cultural tradition that brings people together for celebrations, formal ceremonies, conflict-resolution, and for building a general sense of community.
-
Our Mission is to create an atmosphere where people can meet, relax, and wind down together.
-
Kava is known for it’s distinctly earthy taste and color, and it’s murky appearance and texture. Kava root has mild topical anesthetic properties which will cause a very temporary initial numbing sensation of the mouth and tongue when consumed. Kava drinkers usually feel this sensation during the first 15 minutes of enjoying a kava session.
In order to get the full, relaxing kava experience, kava drinkers typically drink three full “shells” (8 or 9oz servings). Each serving is traditionally downed in one go - with the third shell completing a session. That’s why during social hour, the 3rd shell’s on us!
-
Our Kava comes from reputable distributors who invest the resources necessary to ensure that they’re receiving and selling safe, quality Kava.
